Academic policies at BU

Graduating with honors

BU awards Latin honors by class percentile, not a fixed GPA. The top 5% of each graduating class within a school or college earn summa cum laude, the next 10% magna cum laude, and the next 15% cum laude. Break points are recalculated every academic year separately for each school or college using cumulative GPA including your final semester. Regardless of percentile, you cannot receive Latin honors with a GPA below 3.0.

Dean's List

BU sets Dean's List criteria per school rather than university-wide. The College of Engineering requires a term GPA of at least 3.00 across at least 12 graded academic units with no unresolved grades, and places you in the top 30% of your cohort. The School of Hospitality Administration requires a 3.5 term GPA, and the College of General Studies uses a 3.70 cumulative GPA for its Dean's Circle. Check your own college.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. As a full-time undergraduate you must earn at least 12 academic units in the term just completed, post a term GPA of at least 2.00, and hold a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Missing any one places you on probation, and you can be on probation for no more than two consecutive terms before facing suspension or dismissal.

Repeating a course

Repeating a course at BU does not replace the original grade — both grades are computed into your GPA. You earn degree-applicable units only once unless the course is explicitly repeatable, and a course taken Pass/Fail cannot later be repeated for a letter grade.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

You may designate up to two courses, up to eight units total, as Pass/Fail toward your degree, with only one per term and none while on academic probation. A D or above is recorded as P* and neither the units nor the grade affect your GPA. A failure is recorded as F*, and both the units and the grade do count in your GPA while the units do not count toward degree requirements.
