UMass Amherst awards Latin honors by percentile rather than fixed GPA. The registrar posts the exact GPA needed each year, recalculated from the last three graduating classes and varying by school or college. You need at least 45 UMass Amherst credits factored into your GPA. Commonwealth Honors College students can earn a separate distinction on top of any Latin honors.
Dean's List
UMass Amherst requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a 3.500 GPA or better in a semester with at least 12 graded credits. This is a semester recognition, not a graduation honor.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.000 places you on Academic Probation. If your cumulative GPA is 2.000 or above but your semester GPA drops below it, you get an Academic Warning instead.
Repeating a course
UMass Amherst does not erase a grade when you repeat a course — the last grade you earn is the one calculated into your GPA, while every attempt stays on your transcript. You cannot repeat a course you already passed with a C or higher, and repeating elsewhere, including at other Five College campuses, never substitutes for the UMass grade.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
You can take one course per term Pass/Fail, elected by the W-drop date, and it cannot be used for General Education, writing, or certain major requirements. There is a useful quirk: if your passing grade would raise your cumulative average, the letter grade is recorded instead of a P. A failing grade always counts as 0.0 regardless.
