Rice calculates Latin honors by cumulative GPA percentile within each academic school rather than against a fixed university-wide GPA, recalculated for each graduating class. Roughly 30% of each year's class ends up with some level of Latin honors.
Dean's List
Rice does not use the term Dean's List — its equivalent is the President's Honor Roll, published in week 6 of the fall and spring semesters. It requires at least 12 graded semester hours with no F or U grades, and the cutoff is recalculated each semester to capture roughly the top 30% of eligible undergraduates. Fall 2025 required a perfect 4.000; Fall 2024 required about 3.945.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 1.67 to stay in good academic standing. You are placed on probation if either your semester or cumulative GPA drops below 1.67, and suspended if your semester GPA falls below 1.00 or you land on probation a third time. Graduating requires a cumulative GPA of at least 1.67, and 2.00 in your major coursework.
Repeating a course
Rice offers no grade forgiveness. Every attempt and its grade stays on your transcript and counts in both your term and cumulative GPA — only the credit hours are awarded once, for whichever attempt earned the higher grade.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
You can take at most one course per semester Pass/Fail, with a lifetime cap of four courses or 14 semester hours, by a deadline around week 10. A grade of D− or better becomes a P with no GPA impact, but an F still counts as a failure in your GPA.
