Academic policies at FIU

Graduating with honors

HonorMinimum cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.50
Magna cum laude3.70
Summa cum laude3.90

These apply to your cumulative FIU GPA. You also need grade points in at least 40 semester hours of FIU coursework — 33 for the RN-BSN pathways — and P/F, S/U, and audit grades do not count toward that total. FIU graduate degrees carry no GPA-based honors.

Dean's List

FIU requires a term GPA of at least 3.50. You need a term GPA of 3.500 or higher across at least nine term credit hours carrying grade points. It is noted on your permanent transcript.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Your cumulative GPA must stay at or above 2.0. Falling below triggers Academic Warning, then Academic Probation if it stays low. You are dismissed only if both your cumulative and semester GPA are below 2.0 after probation, and only once you have attempted at least 20 semester hours.

Repeating a course

You can repeat up to three courses in which you earned below a C to improve your GPA, and only the grade from your last attempt counts. The repeat must match the original course, grading option, and credit load, and be taken at FIU. Forgiveness cannot be applied once your degree has been conferred.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Some courses are offered Pass/Fail, or with an optional letter-grade choice, at the college or department's discretion. You choose your grading option at registration and cannot change it after the add/drop period ends.
