Academic policies at USF
Graduating with honors
| Honor | Minimum cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90 |
You need both a USF GPA and an overall GPA of at least 3.50, plus 40 hours of graded upper-level USF coursework — 30 for programs with multiple clinical experiences such as Nursing. Your overall GPA sets your tier and is never rounded, so a 3.69 stays cum laude. Grades forgiven under USF's grade forgiveness policy do not count toward honors, and any academic integrity violation makes you ineligible regardless of GPA.
Dean's List
USF's Dean's List is run by each college, so the bar depends on your major. Arts and Sciences requires a 3.90 semester GPA across at least 12 graded hours with no incomplete or withdrawal grades that term, while Undergraduate Studies instead recognises its top 10% of full-time students each semester.
Good academic standing
You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. Your USF GPA must stay at or above 2.00. Dropping below places you on academic probation with a registration hold until you meet an advisor, and you must then earn at least a 2.00 each following semester or face academic dismissal.
Repeating a course
USF offers two routes. Grade Forgiveness lets you retake a course at USF and remove the old grade from your GPA, capped at three uses — but courses forgiven this way do not count toward Latin honors. Academic Renewal is a separate one-time reset for students returning after dismissal or with a GPA below 2.00, excluding past coursework from your GPA while it stays on your transcript.
Pass/fail grades and your GPA
Some USF courses are graded S/U rather than with a letter grade, and those grades do not factor into your GPA. Most S-graded courses cannot be applied toward general education or major requirements, so confirm with your advisor before counting one toward your degree.
