Academic policies at UC Davis

Graduating with honors

UC Davis awards Highest Honors, High Honors, and Honors rather than Latin titles, and the percentile band widens with the units you have completed. The GPA needed is recalculated every cycle from the prior winter quarter and differs by college: for the 2026 cycle Highest Honors started near 4.000 in Letters and Science, 3.991 in Biological Sciences, 3.986 in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and 3.983 in Engineering. Treat those as one year's snapshot.

Dean's List

UC Davis calls this the Dean's Honors List. Each quarter, per college and class level, students completing at least 12 letter-graded units with a GPA in the top 16% of their class level and college are named to it — so there is no fixed GPA, since the bar is set by that quarter's population.

Good academic standing

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to stay in good academic standing. You need both a cumulative and a term GPA of 2.0 or higher, and to be passing an average of 12 units per quarter. Falling below triggers Academic Notice, and a term GPA below 1.5 — or two consecutive Notice terms — can lead to disqualification.

Repeating a course

You can repeat and replace up to 16 units of courses graded D+ or below, or Not Passed. For those first 16 units only the second attempt counts toward your GPA, marked on the transcript as excluded. Once past the cap, every subsequent repeat counts both grades.

Pass/fail grades and your GPA

Pass/No Pass work must be equivalent to a C− or better to earn a P, is capped at one-third of the units you take in residence and apply toward your degree, must be selected by the 40th day of instruction, and cannot be used to retake a course you already took for a letter grade.
