How Farkle scoring works

Farkle is a folk dice game played with six dice. On your turn you roll all six, set aside at least one scoring die, and then choose: bank the points you have so far, or roll the remaining dice for more. If a roll contains nothing that scores, that is a farkle. Your turn ends and everything you collected during it is gone.

These values are the ones most tables agree on:

DicePoints
Each 1100
Each 550
Three 1s1,000 (300 in some rule sets)
Three 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6sFace × 100 (200 to 600)
Four / five / six of a kind1,000 / 2,000 / 3,000, or double the triple for each extra die
Straight 1–61,500
Three pairs1,500
Four of a kind + a pair1,500
Two triplets2,500

Every combination has to show up in a single roll. Dice you set aside earlier in the turn cannot be added to new ones to complete a set.

What changes with house rules

Farkle has no single rulebook, which is why two families can score the same roll differently. The usual differences:

  • Three 1s worth 1,000 or 300.
  • Four, five and six of a kind as fixed bonuses, or doubling the triple with each extra die.
  • A straight at 1,500 or 2,500; three pairs at 1,500, 750 or 500.
  • Whether four of a kind plus a pair, and two triplets, earn a bonus at all.

Agree on these before the first roll and set them under House rules. The scoring helper, the scoring chart and the printed sheet all follow your choices.

Getting on the board

Many groups set an entry threshold: a player’s first bank must be at least 500 points in one turn (350 and 1,000 are also common). Until you make it, you cannot stop on a smaller score. The scorekeeper enforces this and labels anyone still waiting as not on the board.

Hot dice

If every die you have rolled ends up scoring, you have hot dice: pick up all six and keep rolling, adding to the points already built up this turn. It is exciting and risky, because a farkle on the fresh roll still wipes the whole turn.

Three farkles in a row

A popular variant charges a penalty, usually 500 or 1,000 points, when a player farkles on three turns in a row. The count then starts again. Turn it on under House rules and the score sheet tracks the streak for each player. A total can drop below zero.

The final round

When a player’s total reaches the target, the game is not quite over. Every other player gets one more turn to pass them, and the highest total at the end wins. If your group prefers first-to-the-target wins outright, switch the final round off.

A worked example

Using the common scoring, Sam rolls 1, 1, 1, 5, 2, 3. Three 1s are 1,000 and the 5 adds 50, so the best play is to keep four dice for 1,050 and roll two. (Keeping only the three 1s for 1,000 leaves three dice to roll, which some players prefer.) Sam rolls 5, 4, keeps the 5 for 1,100, and rolls the last die: a 1. That is 1,200, and all six dice have now scored, so Sam has hot dice and picks up all six. The new roll is 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 6: no 1s, no 5s, no triple, no three pairs. Farkle. Sam scores 0 for the turn. Banking at 1,200 would have been the safe call.

Printing a score sheet

Print blank score sheet gives a grid of 20 turns with a turn column and a running-total column for each player, plus the scoring chart for your house rules. Print this game prints the current game round by round. Find more scorekeepers on the game night page.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you need to win Farkle?

Most groups play to 10,000. For a shorter game, 5,000 works well. Whatever the target, the usual rule is that once someone reaches it, every other player gets one last turn to beat them.

What counts as a farkle?

A roll in which none of the dice score: no 1s, no 5s, and no combination such as three of a kind. The turn ends at once and every point collected earlier in that turn is lost. Points already banked on earlier turns are safe.

How much are three pairs worth?

It depends on the table. Many groups score three pairs at 1,500, some at 750 or 500, and a few do not count it at all. Pick your value in House rules and the score sheet and scoring helper both use it.

What is four of a kind worth in Farkle?

There are two common systems. With fixed bonuses, four of a kind is 1,000, five is 2,000 and six is 3,000 whatever the face. With doubling, each extra die doubles the three-of-a-kind value, so four 3s are 600 and five 3s are 1,200.

Can I combine dice from different rolls into a three of a kind?

No. A combination only counts if all of its dice come up in the same roll. A 4 set aside earlier cannot join two 4s from the next roll. That is why the scoring helper looks at one roll at a time.

What does getting on the board mean?

Many groups require a minimum score in a single turn, often 500, before a player's points start to count. Until you reach it you cannot stop and bank a smaller amount; you keep rolling until you get there or farkle.

What happens if two players tie?

This score sheet declares a shared win when two or more players finish level on the highest total. Some groups play one extra round between the tied players instead; you can do that by undoing the last turn and continuing.

Is my game saved if I close the page?

Yes. The game is stored in this browser as you play, so refreshing or closing the tab keeps every turn. The last 10 finished games are listed under the scorekeeper. Nothing is sent to a server.
