How each box scores
A game lasts 13 turns, and every turn fills exactly one box. You may roll up to three times per turn, keeping any dice you like between rolls. If a roll fits nothing useful you still have to fill a box, and writing 0 in it is called scratching.
- Aces to Sixes: add up only the dice showing that number. Three 4s in Fours is 12.
- 3 of a kind / 4 of a kind: at least three (or four) dice the same, and you score the total of all five dice, not just the matching ones.
- Full house: three of one number and two of another, 25 points.
- Small straight: four in a row (1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6), 30 points.
- Large straight: five in a row, 40 points.
- Yahtzee: all five dice the same, 50 points.
- Chance: any roll, scored as the total of the dice. It is your safety net.
The two bonuses and the Joker rule
Upper bonus. If Aces through Sixes add up to 63 or more, you get 35 extra points. 63 is what three of each face would give you, which is why the card shows a running + or − against that pace: a 4 of a kind in Sixes puts you +6 ahead, while two 3s in Threes leaves you −3.
Yahtzee bonus. Every extra Yahtzee after the first earns 100 points, but only if your Yahtzee box holds 50. If you scratched it earlier, there is no bonus.
Joker rule. An extra Yahtzee still has to be placed somewhere, whether or not it earned the bonus. If the upper box for that number is open, it has to go there (five 4s in Fours is 20). If that box is already used, you may put it in any open lower box and it counts as a full hand: 25 for a full house, 30 or 40 for the straights, the dice total for 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind or Chance. Only if the lower section is full as well do you take a 0 in one of your open upper boxes. In Enter dice mode the card applies all of this for you and only highlights the boxes you are allowed to use.
A worked example
Suppose a finished card reads Aces 3, Twos 6, Threes 9, Fours 12, Fives 20 and Sixes 18. The upper subtotal is 68, which clears 63, so the bonus adds 35 for an upper total of 103. In the lower section the player scored 24 for 3 of a kind, scratched 4 of a kind, and took 25 for a full house, 30 for a small straight, 50 for a Yahtzee and 22 in Chance. Later they rolled five 4s. Fours was already filled, so the Joker rule let them score that roll as a large straight for 40, and because the Yahtzee box held 50 it also earned a 100-point bonus. The lower boxes add up to 191, plus 100 makes a lower total of 291, and the grand total is 103 + 291 = 394.
Strategy tips
- Early in the game, chase the upper bonus. Three or more 5s or 6s is rarely a bad use of a turn.
- Save Chance for a bad turn late in the game rather than spending it on an ordinary roll in turn two.
- When something must be scratched, give up a box that is hard to fill (Yahtzee late in the game, or 4 of a kind) or Aces, which is worth at most 5 points anyway.
- Holding four in a row with a roll left and Large Straight open? Keep all four and roll the fifth die: you cannot lose the small straight you already have.
- With three of a kind after the first roll, keep all three and reroll the other two. That keeps the full house, 4 of a kind and Yahtzee all in play.
Playing with the online card
Add up to eight players and type their names. The highlighted column shows whose turn it is, and the turn passes along after each new box. Tap a filled box to fix a mistake, or use Undo. When everyone has filled all 13 boxes, the winner is announced (ties included) and the game is saved to your recent games. New game clears the scores but keeps the names.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Yahtzee score?
There is no official benchmark, but there is a useful reference point: Tom Verhoeff's computer analysis of optimal solitaire play (Eindhoven University of Technology) puts the expected score with perfect strategy at about 254. Real players make choices that are less than perfect, so landing in the 200s is a solid game, and anything above 300 almost always involves at least one extra Yahtzee.
How do you get the 35-point upper bonus?
Score 63 or more across Aces through Sixes. 63 is exactly three of each face (3 + 6 + 9 + 12 + 15 + 18), so that is the pace to aim for. Four of a kind in Fives or Sixes buys room to fall short elsewhere. The score card shows each player's pace as + or − against three of each.
What happens when you roll a second Yahtzee?
If your Yahtzee box already holds 50, you get a 100-point bonus, and the roll still has to fill a box. It must go in the matching upper box if that is open. If not, it can go in any open lower box at full value, so a full house scores 25 and the straights 30 and 40. If the lower section is also full, you write 0 in an open upper box.
What if I already put a 0 in the Yahtzee box?
Then later Yahtzees earn no 100-point bonus. The Joker placement rule still applies, so the roll can still score as a full house or straight if the matching upper box is already used.
Does a Yahtzee count as a full house?
Under the standard rules, only as a Joker: once your Yahtzee box is filled and the matching upper box is used, five of a kind can be scored as a full house for 25. Some families let it count at any time. Agree on a house rule before the game starts.
Does a large straight also count as a small straight?
Yes. A small straight needs any four dice in sequence, and 1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6 contains one, so you can score 30 in Small Straight if your Large Straight box is already filled.
Is my game saved if I close the page?
Yes. The current game, the player names and your last 10 finished games are stored in this browser, so a refresh or a closed tab picks up where you left off. Nothing is sent to a server, and another device will not see your games.
Can I print a blank Yahtzee score sheet?
Yes. Choose 1 to 6 player columns and press Print blank score card. You get a single portrait page with a how-to-score column, tick boxes for bonus Yahtzees, and none of the site's menus or ads. Print this game produces the same layout filled in with your current scores.
