How UNO scoring works

Plenty of people play UNO one hand at a time and never keep score, but the official way to play is a race to 500 points across many rounds. A round ends the moment someone plays their last card. That player then collects points for every card the others are still holding. Nobody else scores in that round, so your total only moves when you win a hand.

Card left in a handPoints
Number cards 0–9Face value
Draw Two, Reverse, Skip20
Wild, Wild Draw Four50
Wild Shuffle Hands, blank customizable Wild (newer decks)40

The game ends after the round in which somebody's total reaches 500, and the highest total wins. If you want a quicker evening, lower the target in setup; 250 makes for a game of roughly half the length.

Using the card counter

Under the score sheet is a counter built for the end of a round, when everyone fans out their cards on the table. Choose the player who went out, then pick each other player in turn and tap their cards: a number button for each number card, and the named buttons for action and wild cards. The running total shows next to each name. When every hand is in, press Enter roundand the winner's box gets the full total while every other box gets 0. If you tap the wrong card, Remove last takes it back.

A worked example round

Four players, round 3. Maya plays her last card. The others turn over their hands:

  • Jon holds a 7, a 2 and a Skip: 7 + 2 + 20 = 29.
  • Priya holds a Wild Draw Four and a 9: 50 + 9 = 59.
  • Sam holds a 0 and a Reverse: 0 + 20 = 20.

Maya scores 29 + 59 + 20 = 108for the round; Jon, Priya and Sam each score 0. If Maya's total was 412 before this round, she is now on 520, the game ends, and she wins.

The lowest-score variant

The official rules also describe a second way to keep score. Instead of handing the points to the winner, every player who still has cards is charged the value of their own hand, and the player who went out scores 0. Totals only go up, and the game still stops when somebody reaches 500, but now the player with the lowesttotal at that moment wins. Pick “Keep your own points (lowest wins)” in setup and the counter writes each player's own hand into their box instead.

Using the example above under this variant, Jon would score 29, Priya 59, Sam 20 and Maya 0.

Rules people often get wrong

  • A final Draw Two still counts. If the winning card is a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four, the next player draws those cards before hands are counted, which can add a lot to the winner's score.
  • Forgetting to call UNO costs cards, not points.A player caught with one card who didn't say “UNO” draws two cards as a penalty; nothing is written on the score sheet.
  • Stacking Draw Twosis a popular house rule, not part of the official game. It doesn't change scoring, only how many cards end up in hands.

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep score in UNO?

When a player plays their last card, the round is over and that player collects points for every card still held by the other players: number cards at face value, Draw Two, Reverse and Skip at 20 each, and Wild and Wild Draw Four at 50 each. Only the round winner scores; everyone else scores nothing that round.

How many points do you need to win UNO?

The standard target is 500. The game ends after the round in which a player's total reaches 500 or more, and that player wins. You can change the target in setup if you want a shorter or longer game.

How much is a Wild Draw Four worth in UNO?

50 points, the same as a plain Wild. Draw Two, Reverse and Skip cards are worth 20 each. A 0 card is worth nothing, which is why it is the best card to get stuck with.

What are Wild Shuffle Hands and the blank customizable cards worth?

Decks made since 2018 include a Wild Shuffle Hands card and blank Wild cards you can write your own rule on. Those count 40 points each when left in a hand. The counter has a button for them.

Is there a way to play UNO where the lowest score wins?

Yes. In this variant every player who did not go out is charged the points in their own hand, and the player who went out scores 0. When anyone reaches 500, the player with the lowest total wins. Choose “Keep your own points (lowest wins)” in setup and the sheet and counter switch over.

Do the cards drawn from a final Draw Two count?

Yes. If the last card played is a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four, the next player still has to draw those cards, and they count toward the points the winner collects.

Is my game saved if I close the page?

Yes. Player names, scores and settings are saved in your browser after every change. Nothing is sent to a server, so the sheet works offline once loaded.
