How Golf is scored

Golf is a card game where, like the sport, low is good. Each hand is a hole. In the widely played 6-card version, every player has six cards face down in two rows of three and turns two of them up to start. On each turn you draw from the deck or the discard pile and either swap the card for one of yours (face up) or discard it. When one player has all six cards face up, everyone else gets one more turn, then all hands are revealed and scored. That number goes in the sheet for the hole.

Common 6-card card values

These are the values most groups use. Every table has its own tweaks, so treat them as a starting point:

CardPoints
Ace1
2−2
3 to 10Face value
Jack, Queen10
King0
Matching pair in a column0 for the pair

Popular variants include adding Jokers worth −2 (or more), letting a pair of 2s keep its −4 instead of cancelling, bonuses for four of a kind across two columns, and the 4-card (2×2) and 9-card (3×3) layouts. The score sheet doesn't enforce any of these: it takes the hole total each player works out, so it fits whatever rules you play.

A worked example hole

Sam's hand at the end of hole 1, as two rows of three:

King72
Queen7Ace

The two 7s share a column, so they cancel to 0. The King is 0, the Queen 10, the 2 is −2 and the Ace 1. Sam scores 0 + 0 + 10 − 2 + 1 = 9. A player holding four Kings and two 2s, with the 2s in different columns, would score −4, which you enter by typing 4 and tapping ±.

Using the sheet

Pick 9 or 18 holes in setup, add players in seating order, and turn on the dealer indicator if you want the sheet to show who deals each hole. The highlighted row is the current hole, the bottom row keeps running totals, and the star marks whoever is lowest so far. After the last hole the banner names the winner, or every player sharing the lowest total if it's a tie. Everything saves in your browser, so you can close the tab between holes, and finished games appear under Recent games. For a paper version, Print blank score sheet gives a clean page with a row per hole.

Frequently asked questions

How do you score the Golf card game?

At the end of each hole, turn all your cards face up and add them up. In the most common 6-card rules an Ace is 1, number cards are face value, a 2 is minus 2, Jacks and Queens are 10, Kings are 0, and two equal cards in the same column cancel to 0. Write that total for the hole; the lowest total after all holes wins.

How many holes are in a game of Golf?

Nine is the usual length, one hand per hole. Eighteen makes a longer game. Choose either in the setup panel and the sheet adds the right number of rows.

Can a hole score be negative?

Yes. With 2s worth minus 2 (and in some games Jokers too), a good hand can come in under zero. Tap ± in a box to make the score negative, or type the minus sign on a keyboard.

Do two Kings in a column count as zero?

A pair in a column always cancels to 0, and Kings are already 0, so a King pair scores 0 either way. Some tables give a bonus for special pairs; agree on it before you tee off.

Do a pair of 2s cancel or count as minus 4?

Tables disagree. Under the plain rule any pair in a column scores 0, so a pair of 2s throws away 4 points; some groups let paired 2s keep their minus 4. The sheet only takes hole totals, so either rule works.

Is this for 4-card or 9-card Golf too?

Yes. The sheet records one number per player per hole, whatever layout you deal. Use the scoring your table plays and enter the hole total.
